What exactly is ADHD, and how do I know if I have it?
ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is a neurodevelopmental condition that impacts how people focus, manage their time and emotions, and regulate their behaviour. It often shows up as trouble paying attention, being easily distracted, acting on impulse, or feeling restless. For many people, it can also affect organization, motivation, and follow-through on daily tasks.
There are 3 types of ADHD: Inattentive Presentation, Hyperactive/Impulsive Presentation, and Combined Presentation. Understanding which type of ADHD you have can help guide personalized treatment strategies that actually work.
If you or your child struggles to stay focused, keep organized, manage behaviour, and regulate emotions, and these struggles are negatively impacting school, work, or relationships, it might be ADHD. The best way to know for sure is through a professional ADHD assessment, which can provide clarity and the next steps.
What causes ADHD?
ADHD is caused by a combination of factors. Research shows that genetics plays a strong role. ADHD often runs in families. It’s also linked to differences in brain development, particularly in areas that control attention, planning, and impulse control. Environmental factors, such as prenatal exposure to substances, low birth weight, or early childhood adversity, may also increase the risk of developing ADHD.
It’s important to know that ADHD is not caused by poor parenting, lack of effort, or personality. It’s a real neurological condition.
Can ADHD be treated?
Yes, ADHD can absolutely be treated and managed. While it doesn’t “go away”, the right combination of treatment and support can make a big difference in how ADHD shows up in daily life. At Psychology For Life, we take a practical, strengths-based approach to ADHD treatment.
We offer Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), executive function coaching, mindfulness strategies, and parent support to help you or your child build skills and confidence. For some people, medication may also be part of their treatment plan, which we can discuss alongside therapy and behavioural interventions.
What happens if ADHD goes untreated?
When ADHD is left untreated, the daily challenges can add up over time. It can lead to difficulties at school or work, strained relationships, low self-esteem, and chronic stress. People with untreated ADHD are also more likely to experience anxiety, depression, or burnout from constantly feeling like they’re falling behind.
There is a robust link between ADHD and mental health conditions like anxiety and depression. While ADHD is often thought of as a focus or attention issue, its impact can reach much further. Struggling to meet expectations, keep up with tasks, or feel in control of daily life can lead to chronic stress, low self-esteem, and emotional exhaustion; all of which increase the risk for other mental health conditions.
Getting the right support early on can help reduce these risks and improve overall well-being, productivity, and emotional health.
Does ADHD last into adulthood?
Yes, ADHD is a lifelong condition. While some children may outgrow certain symptoms, many continue to experience challenges into adulthood, though the symptoms may look different over time.
For example, hyperactivity may decrease, but difficulties with focus, organization, emotional regulation, and time management often remain. The good news is that treatment can help at any age. Adults with ADHD can learn tools and strategies to feel more in control and less overwhelmed.
What does it mean if someone is masking their symptoms of ADHD?
When someone is masking their symptoms of ADHD, it means they are consciously or unconsciously hiding or compensating for their challenges to appear more “neurotypical” or to meet expectations in school, work, or social settings. This often involves:
- Over-preparing or overworking to avoid making mistakes
- Using scripts or routines to appear organized or attentive
- Suppressing impulsive behaviours or emotional reactions
- Avoiding situations where their difficulties might be noticed
- Mimicking others’ behaviour to blend in
Masking can be exhausting and may lead to feelings of burnout, anxiety, or low self-esteem, especially if someone is constantly trying to keep up or feeling like they are failing despite their effort. It is especially common in women and girls, who are often diagnosed later in life because their ADHD symptoms may be less disruptive and more internalized.
Recognizing masking is important because it can delay diagnosis and treatment, and because everyone deserves support that honours how their brain truly works, not just how well they are able to hide their struggle.
