What Is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It’s an evidence-based, trauma-informed therapy that helps the brain reprocess memories that are “stuck,” so they no longer feel overwhelming or distressing. What makes EMDR different is that it doesn’t rely on in-depth storytelling or analysis. You don’t need to describe everything that happened. Instead, we focus on what your brain and body are still holding onto, and gently help them release it.

Using bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements, tapping, or tones), EMDR activates the brain’s natural healing abilities. Over time, painful memories lose their emotional charge, and the beliefs you hold about yourself begin to shift from shame to self-worth, from fear to safety.

EMDR is recommended for adults, teens, and children (age 6+), and it’s recognized by the World Health Organization and other global health authorities as one of the most effective treatments for PTSD and trauma-related symptoms.

How EMDR Therapy CAN HELP

Whether you’re six or sixty, difficult experiences can remain in the mind and body in ways that feel hard to explain. Maybe it’s a memory that keeps popping up, a sense of unease you can’t shake, or a pattern that keeps repeating no matter how hard you try to change it. EMDR Therapy offers a way to work through.

You don’t need to “go into detail” for EMDR therapy to work. You just need a safe space, a trained therapist, and a willingness to try something new. Our EMDR-trained team of therapists is here to walk with you at your pace, creating a supportive environment where healing can begin

EMDR therapy can support children, teens, and adults through:

Anxiety & Panic

Whether it shows up as constant worry, physical tension, or avoidance, EMDR helps you get to the root of anxiety and build new patterns of safety and self-regulation.

Depression

If life feels heavy, hopeless, or unmotivating, EMDR can help unpack what’s fueling that low mood, helping you feel lighter, more connected, and more like yourself.

Trauma & PTSD

From single-incident trauma to ongoing stress or childhood wounds, EMDR therapy provides a way to safely process the past without needing to relive it all.

Grief & Loss

Whether you're grieving a person, a relationship, or a version of life you didn’t get, EMDR offers space to honor that loss and begin healing with support.

Shame & Low Self-Esteem

Many people carry beliefs like “I’m not good enough” or “It was my fault.” EMDR helps shift those beliefs, creating space for self-compassion and confidence.

Anger, Irritability, or Emotional Outbursts

If emotions tend to come on fast or feel hard to control, EMDR can help regulate emotional responses and make daily life feel more manageable.

Chronic Stress & Burnout

When the pressure never seems to let up, EMDR can help you slow down, release stored stress, and reset your nervous system.

Relationship Challenges & Attachment Wounds

When relationships feel harder than they should, EMDR therapy can help you understand why and shift the patterns that keep getting in the way.

Our Approach

How EMDR Therapy Works AT PSYCHOLOGY FOR LIFE

step 1. Laying the Groundwork

We start by getting to know you and your story. We build trust, identify your goals, and teach you calming strategies to help you feel grounded and in control throughout the process.

step 2. Targeting the Root

When you’re ready, we identify a specific memory or emotional pattern that feels stuck. Using bilateral stimulation, like eye movements or tapping, we help your brain reprocess that memory so it becomes less distressing over time.

step 3. Reprocessing & Rewiring

As the memory loses its emotional intensity, we help you strengthen positive beliefs about yourself (like “I am safe” or “I am enough”) and check in with your body’s response. We end each session by making sure you feel stable and supported.

step 4. Continuing the Healing

In each new session, we review your progress, reassess what’s still unresolved, and keep moving at your pace. You don’t need to relive your trauma to heal from it—and you’re never alone in the process.

QUESTIONS ABOUT EMDR THERAPY

If you don’t see the answer to your question here, click the button below to see more FAQs or contact us, and we’ll be happy to assist you or provide the information you need.

EMDR doesn’t require you to retell your entire story. It uses bilateral stimulation in the form of eye movements, tapping, or tones to engage the brain’s natural healing mechanisms. You still talk with your therapist, but you’re not expected to explain everything in detail or “figure it all out” with words.

Some clients feel relief within just a few sessions, especially during the reprocessing phase. Others notice more subtle shifts at first, like feeling less reactive or calmer in stressful situations. It’s not instant, but it can be surprisingly fast.

That depends on your goals and history. A single traumatic incident may be addressed in 6–8 sessions. More complex trauma or longstanding emotional patterns may take longer. Your therapist will guide you through a personalized plan that fits your pace.

Absolutely. EMDR is effective for anxiety, grief, low self-esteem, performance anxiety, and other emotional blocks. If there’s something from your past you can’t seem to shake, EMDR therapy might be the tool that helps you finally move forward.

Yes. EMDR can be adapted for children as young as 6 years old using age-appropriate language, visuals, and grounding strategies. Many teens find EMDR empowering because it doesn’t require them to talk about everything, and they can process quietly, at their own pace.

POSITIVE OUTCOMES
OF EMDR THERAPY

Change takes time, but even early on, EMDR therapy can bring a sense of relief. Learning new ways to cope often helps things feel a little more manageable.
Over time, you may notice:

"Trauma is not what happens to you, but what happens inside you as a result of what happened to you."
