WHAT IS AN ADHD ASSESSMENT?

An ADHD Assessment is a comprehensive psychological evaluation that helps determine whether symptoms like inattention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity are related to Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or something else.

At Psychology For Life, we go beyond checklists or quick screenings. Our assessment process is thoughtful and thorough because ADHD often overlaps with other conditions like learning differences, executive functioning challenges, or anxiety, and we want to make sure nothing is missed.

The assessment process includes:

Once the assessment is complete, you’ll receive a clear, easy-to-understand report and a feedback session to explain the results and the next steps.

When you don’t know what’s behind the struggles, it’s easy to blame yourself or feel like you’re falling short. Living with undiagnosed ADHD can lead to years of frustration, missed opportunities, and unnecessary stress. But getting clear answers can be a turning point.

A child or adult ADHD Assessment isn’t just about diagnosing a condition; it’s about giving you (or your child) the clarity and understanding you’ve been looking for.

After an assessment, you’ll walk away with:

A clear picture of whether ADHD is part of the puzzle

Insight into how attention, impulsivity, or hyperactivity may be affecting daily life

Personalized recommendations for next steps, whether that’s therapy, skill-building, or accommodations at school or work

QUESTIONS ABOUT ADHD ASSESSMENTS

An ADHD assessment is a thorough evaluation used to determine whether you or your child meets the criteria for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). It typically includes interviews, questionnaires, standardized testing, and observations to look at patterns of inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. The goal is to understand what’s really going on, not just whether ADHD is present, but how it may be showing up in daily life. For many people, the process itself is validating and helps explain struggles they’ve faced for years.

The assessment usually takes several hours and is often spread over two or more sessions. After the testing is complete, we spend time reviewing the results and preparing a detailed report. The entire process, from start to finish, typically takes about 4 to 6 weeks. We want to make sure you leave with clear, thoughtful answers, not rushed conclusions. Many people say that even just starting the process brings relief because they’re finally being heard and understood.

Once the ADHD assessment is complete, we’ll meet with you to go over the results and what they mean. If a diagnosis is made, we’ll provide clear, personalized recommendations for treatment and support. This may include therapy, executive function coaching, behavioural strategies, or medication options. Our goal is to make sure you leave knowing exactly what your next steps are and feeling supported, not overwhelmed.

There are three different types of ADHD:

  1. Predominantly Inattentive Type: Struggles with focus, organization, and follow-through. Often seems distracted, forgetful, or “off in their own world.”
  2. Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Type: Marked by restlessness, impulsivity, and difficulty sitting still. May interrupt others, act without thinking, or have trouble slowing down.
  3. Combined Type: A mix of both inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms. This is the most common type.

Understanding which type applies can help explain specific challenges and guide the best approach to treatment and support.

Yes. ADHD can be managed without medication, especially if the symptoms are mild to moderate. Treatment options include therapy, skill-building strategies, executive function coaching, and lifestyle changes like exercise, mindfulness, and sleep routines. However, for some people, especially when symptoms are more severe, a combination of medication and behavioural strategies is often the most effective. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution, and we’ll help you figure out what’s right for you or your child.
