A gifted child’s greatest strengths can sometimes look like their biggest struggles.

You’ve noticed that from an early age, your child picks things up quickly, asks big questions, and is naturally curious. But along with those strengths, they might feel frustrated, overly sensitive, or out of place at school. Gifted children don’t always fit the mould. Many face social, emotional, or behavioural challenges that can be overlooked. Without the right support, their unique needs often go unrecognized.

At Psychology For Life, we help you understand your child’s strengths, challenges, and unique needs so you can support them in learning and in life. Gifted Testing is available in Barrie and Bracebridge.

Gifted Assessment | Barrie & Bracebridge

WHAT IS A GIFTED ASSESSMENT?

A gifted assessment is a standardized evaluation used to measure a child’s intellectual abilities and determine whether they meet the criteria for gifted identification.

Giftedness isn’t a mental health diagnosis; it’s a recognition of exceptional cognitive ability that may open the door to enriched learning opportunities.

At Psychology For Life, we use well-established intellectual assessment tools like the WISC-V (Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, Fifth Edition).

The assessment process includes:

For some families, this process is the first step in helping their child access advanced academic programs. For others, it’s an important tool in understanding emotional or behavioural challenges that may be connected to giftedness.

WHY A GIFTED ASSESSMENT
Can Make a Difference

When you’re raising a gifted child, it’s not always obvious what they need or why things feel harder than they should. When giftedness goes unrecognized, potential can turn into frustration and self-doubt. The truth is that understanding giftedness can change everything, helping you understand your child’s mental health, unique abilities, challenges, and what’s been getting in the way of them feeling supported and understood.

With results in hand, you can:

Advocate for gifted programming or educational enrichment

Learn how your child’s mind works so you can better support their learning

Identify strengths, as well as areas where your child may need extra encouragement or support

Help your child feel seen, understood, and supported in who they are

Gain insight into behaviours or emotions that may be tied to giftedness

QUESTIONS ABOUT GIFTED ASSESSMENTS

If you don’t see the answer to your question here, click the button below to see more FAQs or contact us, and we’ll be happy to assist you or provide the information you need.

If your child learns quickly, remembers things easily, asks deep or complex questions, or seems unusually curious, a gifted assessment may be helpful. Gifted children may also show strong problem-solving skills, creativity, or emotional sensitivity. If you’ve noticed these traits or if your child seems bored, frustrated, or misunderstood at school, a gifted assessment can provide clarity.

Gifted assessments are completed one-on-one in a quiet, supportive environment. A trained psychometrist will guide your child through various tasks and questions that assess intellectual abilities like verbal and nonverbal reasoning, memory, and processing speed. The process is designed to help your child feel comfortable and supported while showing their strengths.

If your child doesn’t meet the criteria for giftedness based on the assessment, it doesn’t mean they aren’t bright or talented. Standardized tests don’t capture everything about a person’s abilities or potential. The assessment may still offer valuable insight into your child’s learning style, strengths, and areas where they may benefit from extra support.

If your child qualifies as gifted, the results can be shared with your school board to explore gifted programming options. These may include enrichment programs, academic acceleration, or special projects tailored to your child’s interests. We’ll also talk with you about ways to support your child’s emotional well-being, social connections, and learning needs at home and school.

The actual assessment usually takes about 90 minutes to complete. Afterward, we review the results, prepare a clear, easy-to-understand report, and meet with you to discuss next steps. The entire process is designed to be supportive, informative, and empowering.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT
FROM A GIFTED ASSESSMENT

By the end of the process, you’ll have more than a report. You’ll have real clarity about what’s been going on and what you can do next.
You’ll walk away with:

"I am neither especially clever nor especially gifted. I am only very, very curious."
