WHAT IS A MENTAL HEALTH ASSESSMENT?
A mental health assessment, also called a psychodiagnostic assessment, is a comprehensive evaluation of your emotional, psychological, and behavioural functioning. It’s designed to help you understand what’s going on beneath the surface, whether you’re feeling anxious, sad, overwhelmed, or stuck.
This assessment process combines clinical interviews, standardized psychological testing, and a review of your history and current symptoms to:
- Evaluate mood, personality, and cognitive functioning
- Identify conditions such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, and personality disorders
- Clarify complex symptoms that may overlap
- Inform treatment recommendations tailored to your needs
A mental health assessment can also reveal strengths, coping skills, and emotional patterns that can help guide therapy and support. Our goal is to help you gain clarity, find answers, and leave with a clear plan for next steps.
Once the assessment is complete, you’ll receive a written report in plain language, along with a feedback session to explain the results and how they can support your mental health and well-being.

- Ongoing anxiety, sadness, or mood changes
- Trouble focusing, managing emotions, or feeling “on edge”
- Difficulty functioning at school, work, or in relationships
- Questions about whether symptoms are related to PTSD, anxiety, depression, or another mental health disorder
- Emotional struggles that don’t seem to improve on their own
- Desire for diagnostic clarity and a treatment roadmap
These assessments can help identify mental health disorders such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, stress-related conditions, and personality disorders.

What is the purpose of a mental health assessment?
A mental health assessment is designed to help you better understand what’s going on beneath the surface. If you’ve been feeling anxious, down, overwhelmed, or just “not yourself,” an assessment can help clarify whether you’re dealing with a specific mental health condition, like anxiety, depression, PTSD, or if something else might be contributing to how you’re feeling. It’s about giving you answers and direction so you can stop guessing and start moving forward with the right support.
How long does a mental health assessment take?
The assessment process usually takes a few hours in total. It often happens over one or two sessions, depending on your needs and availability. After the sessions, we also spend time carefully reviewing and interpreting all the information we’ve gathered. From start to finish, the interview, testing, scoring, and preparing your personalized report usually takes a couple of weeks. We want to make sure we do a thorough and thoughtful job so you leave with real answers and a clear path forward.
What happens during the assessment?
During a mental health assessment, you’ll meet with a psychologist or trained clinician who will talk with you about your experiences, symptoms, and personal history. You’ll also complete some standardized psychological tests. These might include questions about how you think, feel, and behave. The goal is to get a full picture of your mental and emotional health. We know that sitting down to talk about your struggles can feel intimidating, but this process is done in a supportive, judgment-free environment. We’re here to listen, understand, and help you make sense of what you’ve been going through.
Will I receive a diagnosis after the assessment?
Is a mental health assessment only for serious mental health issues?
Not at all. Many people think you need to be in crisis to benefit from an assessment, but that’s not true. Whether you’re struggling with everyday stress, feeling low or anxious, or dealing with more complex challenges, an assessment can help. It’s a useful tool for anyone who feels unsure, overwhelmed, or curious about what’s really going on with their mental health. Sometimes, even just having a professional validate what you’ve been feeling is an important first step toward feeling better.
