WHAT IS A PSYCHOLOGICAL / PSYCHOEDUCATIONAL ASSESSMENT?
A psychological / psychoeducational assessment is a detailed look at how someone thinks, learns, and processes information, as well as any concerns regarding mental health and behaviour. It isn’t just about numbers and scores. It’s about understanding how your brain works, what might be getting in the way of learning and focus, and how those challenges affect daily life. Assessments also explore emotional well-being, personality functioning, and neurodiversity, uncovering how traits like ADHD, autism, anxiety, or mood patterns may be shaping experiences, relationships, and daily functioning.
The process combines a full psychological assessment, which looks at emotional, social, and behavioural well-being, with standardized testing to explore:
- Cognitive function and problem-solving
- Verbal and non-verbal reasoning
- Academic skills like reading, writing, and math
- Attention, memory, and processing speed
- Executive functioning and emotional regulation
- Mental health and personality functioning
- Social functioning and interpersonal skills
A psychological / psychoeducational assessment can also identify whether emotional factors like anxiety, low mood, or self-esteem struggles are impacting functionality at school, home, or at work. We take a whole-person approach, understanding not only how you or your child learns, but how learning and mental health interact.
Our goal is to give you real answers that help you get the ongoing support you need. Whether you’re exploring concerns about a learning disability, mental health, attention challenges, struggles at work, wondering about an ADHD diagnosis, or trying to understand what’s beneath academic struggles, a psychological / psychoeducational assessment can help make sense of what’s been difficult and where support is needed.
Once the assessment is complete, you’ll receive a clear, easy-to-understand report, along with a feedback session where we walk you through what the results mean and how they can support your learning, confidence, and overall well-being.

If you don’t see the answer to your question here, click the button below to see more FAQs or contact us, and we’ll be happy to assist you or provide the information you need.
What is a psychological/ psychoeducational assessment vs. a psychological assessment, and who needs one?
The terms psychoeducational assessment and psychological assessment are often used interchangeably. Both describe a comprehensive evaluation of cognitive, academic, social, and emotional functioning. These assessments can help identify learning disabilities, ADHD, giftedness, autism, mental health diagnoses, or other challenges that may impact daily life and learning. They are often recommended for students struggling in school, adults facing challenges at work, or anyone experiencing unexplained difficulties with attention, memory, learning, or emotional well-being.
What does the assessment process involve?
The process typically includes an intake interview to gather background information, followed by standardized testing that looks at things like IQ, academic skills, memory, and attention. You and/or your child may also complete questionnaires, and observations may be made during testing. Once the information is collected, the psychologist reviews and interprets the results and prepares a detailed report that includes findings, any relevant diagnoses, and personalized recommendations for support and accommodations.
How long does the assessment take, and when will I receive results?
The assessment process usually takes several hours, spread over two or more appointments. From start to finish, including testing, scoring, and report writing, the entire process typically takes about 4 to 6 weeks, depending on appointment availability. Once the assessment is complete, you’ll be invited to a feedback session to go over the results and talk about next steps.
Will this assessment help me or my child get accommodations?
Yes. If the assessment identifies a learning disability, ADHD, mental health diagnosis, or other condition that affects learning or functioning, the report can be used to request accommodations at school or work. This may include supports like extra time on exams, assistive technology, modified tasks, an Individual Education Plan (IEP), or individualized work accommodations.
Are Psychological/ Psychoeducational Assessments covered by OHIP or insurance?
Psychological / psychoeducational assessments are not covered by OHIP; however, many extended health insurance plans include partial or full coverage. It’s a good idea to check with your provider to confirm what’s included under your plan. In addition, assessments for Indigenous youth may be funded through Jordan’s Principle. Psychology For Life can assist with this process and arrange direct billing for Jordan’s Principle once funding is approved.
